The Observer

R5000,00

If you’ve ever sat at the Blueberry Café at Netherwood Farm and simply watched the ankole cattle, you may have felt it too — that quiet stirring inside, a little bit of wonder. This painting holds that same presence, inviting you to pause and share in their grounded stillness.

Description

This piece explores the quiet authority of presence. The ox stands not as a symbol of dominance, but of grounded awareness—watching, waiting, holding space. His stillness invites reflection: what does it mean to witness without reacting? To carry history in the body, and offer steadiness in a world that rushes past?

In painting The Observer, I was drawn to the imposing vulnerability and strength. His gaze is gentle, yet unwavering. He reminds us that observation is an act of care, and that silence can be powerful.

This work rests on a heavy, four deckled-edge paper whose very surface carries its own story. In the spirit of Leonardo da Vinci, who often left sketches and paintings on the reverse of his works, this piece bears even half a painting on its back — a hidden echo of creativity, a reminder that art is never truly abandoned but layered with memory and renewal. The paper carries the quiet hue of a weathered wooden stain, a tone that may soften with the passing of years. Yet the observer, rendered in enduring artist’s pigments, will remain steadfast—unchanged, a witness preserved.
